Aleppo – Mashhad al-Saqat حلب – مشهد السقط

Aleppo - Mashhad al-Saqat (حلب - مشهد السقط‎)

Mashhad al-Saqat (مشهد السقط), located on the eastern slope of Jebel Joushan (جبل جوشن) in the west of Aleppo (حلب), is an important Shia shrine and place of pilgrimage. According to tradition, as the prisoners of the Battle of Karbala (Iraq) were being transported through Aleppo, one of the wives of Hussein had a miscarriage. The deceased child was named Muhasin and buried at this site. The current shrine dates from the 12th and early 13th centuries, when the building was reconstructed under Nur al-Din (نور الدين‎) during Ayyubid rule.

This shrine is known by numerous different names, and may also be referred to as Mashhad al-Muhasin (مشهد المحسن), Mashhad al-Dekeh (مشهد الدكة), or Mashhad al-Tarah (مشهد الطرح).

Getting There: From the city center of Aleppo (حلب), just south of the National Museum (المتحف الوطني), follow Ibrahim Hanano (ابراهيم هنانو) street to the west for about one and a half kilometers. Immediately after passing under the railway tracks, turn left (to the south) and continue for a little less than one kilometer. The shrine will be up the hill on the right (to the west).
