Damascus – Turbeh Araq دمشق – تربة آراق

Damascus - Turbeh Araq (دمشق - تربة آراق)

Turbeh Araq (تربة آراق) was constructed in 1349 as a burial place for Araq Bin Abdullah al-Salhadar (آراق بن عبد الله السلحدار), a governor of Safad (Palestine) during the Mamluk period. Located in the historic southern neighborhood of al-Midan (الميدان), the building is particularly impressive for its façade, on the eastern side of the building. The decorative stonework features turquoise faience inlay above an entry portal with muqarnas. The mausoleum was constructed with alternating black and white stone and has domed chambers on both sides of the entrance. The northern chamber contains the tomb of Araq (آراق).

Attached to the mausoleum, to the southwest, is Seidi Suheib Mosque (جامع سيدي صهيب). This mosque dates back to 1227, originally constructed during the Ayyubid period. It features a simple square minaret supporting an octagonal balcony. The mosque is also said to contain the burial chamber of Seidi Suheib al-Rumi (سيدي صهيب الرومي), though this is disputed. Both buildings were recently restored, though it may still be difficult to gain access to the interiors.

Getting There: The neighborhood of al-Midan (الميدان) stretches along a single main street beginning at Murad Basha Mosque (جامع مراد باشا) and heading south-southwest. Several historic sites, including Turbeh Araq (تربة آراق), can be found in this area. After reaching the prominent Bab Masala Square (ساحة باب مصلى), continue south-southwest on al-Midan (الميدان) approximately one hundred and fifty meters. Turbeh Araq (تربة آراق) will be on the right hand side of the road.
